Bush Losing Core Supporters

WASHINGTON, May 11 – President Bush appears to be losing support among a key group of voters who had hitherto stood firmly with the president even as his poll numbers among other groups fell dramatically.

A new Gallup poll shows that, for the first time, Bush’s approval rating has fallen below 50% among total fucking morons, and now stands at 44%. This represents a dramatic drop compared to a poll taken just last December, when 62% of total fucking morons expressed support for the president and his policies.

Black Sun

From Earth Science Picture of the Day: “During spring in Denmark, at approximately one half an hour before sunset, flocks of more than a million European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) gather from all corners to join in the incredible formations shown above. This phenomenon is called Black Sun (in Denmark), and can be witnessed in early spring throughout the marshlands of western Denmark, from March through to the middle of April. The starlings migrate from the south and spend the day in the meadows gathering food, sleeping in the reeds during the night.”

Thou shalt not burn it...

...but it's okay to, uh, fart through it.

Quotes from the Past I

Too much and for too long we seem to have surrendered personal excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product now is over $800 billion a year.

But that gross national product, if we judge the United States of America by that, counts air pollution, and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors, and the jails for people who break them. It counts the destruction of redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and it counts nuclear warheads, and armoured cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.

Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our passion nor our devotion to our country.

It measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it can tell us everything about America — except why we are proud that we are Americans.

— Robert F. Kennedy, 3/18/1968

September 2004:
And as a result of the United States military, Taliban no longer is in existence. And the people of Afghanistan are now free. (Applause.) In other words when you say something as President you better make it clear so everybody understands what you’re saying, and you better mean what you say.

June 2006:
The United States military is quietly carrying out the largest military offensive in Afghanistan since U.S. troops invaded the country in 2001."The Taliban has made a comeback, and we have the next 90 days to crush them," said a senior U.S. military official. The offensive, "Operation Mountain Thrust," involves almost 11,000 U.S. troops and is focused on four southern Afghanistan provinces.

quietrevolution info about this model:
Unlike other renewable energy sources, quietrevolution is also available in a unique model capable of creating a striking visual display that is part illuminated billboard, part artwork, part renewable energy device.
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) embedded in each of its three S-shaped blades fire in sequence as the blades rotate, painting a video screen that appears to hang in the air. This full colour and motion image is clearly visible day and night.

Europa commented on this; it's actually an advertising display model... it could flash "Eat at Mhom's", for example.

Which model would you prefer?

quietrevolution

An elegant vertical-axis wind turbine, quietrevolution has been designed and developed by XCO2, an established low-carbon energy consultancy and engineering practice.Virtually silent and vibration free, quietrevolution is ideally suited to both urban sites and exposed locations.
The simple and robust design (patent pending) has just one moving part, maximising reliability and minimising maintenance requirements.

quietrevolution offers clear advantages over conventional turbines:
• Compact, ‘S' blade design
• Virtually silent operation
• Minimal vibration
• Robust performance, even in turbulent winds
• Ease of integration into columns and buildings

The design is currently in pre-production and will undergo final tests and assessment before the first commercial installations in winter 2005. Early customers include city councils, home owners and architects, all of whom share a common vision of renewable energy with sophisticated design

Item 1: The top commander in Iraq, Army Gen. George W. Casey, is preparing to order all troops in Iraq to undergo "core values" training including humane treatment of civilians and an understanding of Iraqi culture, the Post and ABC News reported.

Item 2: On the basis for Homeland Security’s reduction of counter-terrorism grant money to NYC: New York's grant plummeted from about $207 million to $124 million. A DHS risk scorecard for the city asserted that the home of the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge has "zero" national monuments or icons.
